OVERVIEW
This design-focused exploration draws on existing research into coconut coir/fiber as a viable, bio-based packaging alternative in an industry ready for sustainable change. Along with an improved packaging concept, I refreshed Sun Bum’s visual identity to reflect a relaxed, organic, and beachy ethos associated with coastal living. This updated branding resonates with those drawn to natural beauty and environmentally conscious products.
Inspired by Sun Bum’s tropical roots and the urgency to reduce plastic waste in the cosmetics industry, this project reimagines both the brand’s visual identity and packaging with sustainability at its core.

RESEARCH
This redesigned packaging concept leverages coconut coir—a biodegradable, renewable fiber sourced from the outer coconut husk, which is often torched or discarded after harvesting and processing. Repurposing this abundant natural material as a plastic alternative would create a circular, beach-friendly product that reduces plastic dependency and waste in a highly polluting industry.
While not a scientist (just a Gen Z sustainability advocate), I approached this concept thoughtfully, drawing on existing research into the material potentials for coconut fiber, as well as considering material sourcing, visual identity, and environmental impact. This design exploration reflects my commitment to sustainability, specifically reducing waste by creatively addressing plastic dependency in consumer products.
